— Optimist Club accepting applications for award

The Steamboat Optimist Club is accepting applications from area high school seniors for its Teen of the Month award. All teens recognized as a Teen of the Month will be eligible for a $1,000 Teen of the Year award to be presented at the Teen of the Year dinner in May. Applications are available at all counselors' offices in Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Oak Creek, or call club president Sid Hopkins at 870-8172 or Rob McCarthy at 871-7179 for more information.

Fairgrounds available for horseback riding

Don't let your horse get out of shape. The Routt County Fairgrounds multi-purpose building is open to the public for horseback riding. The cost is $5 an hour. Open riding sessions last through the winter with a varied schedule. Horses are not provided. The schedule is posted at www.routtcountyfair.org, or call 276-3068 for more information.

Library promotes 'Sock It to Me' program for teens

Bud Werner Memorial Library once again is encouraging local teens to take part in its "Sock It to Me" program. Children ages 11 to 18 are invited to stop by the library to enter a drawing to win a holiday stocking full of books, movies and other goodies. Children and teens will receive a ticket for the drawing every time they check out a book or movie. Call Alison Lambart, youth services manager, at 879-0240, ext. 312, for more information.

Lee Ann Womack to play at ski area Jan. 9

Grammy-winning musician Lee Ann Womack is playing a concert Jan. 9 at the Steamboat Ski Area. Tickets are $28 and can be purchased at All That Jazz, Christy Sports in Central Park Plaza and SportStalker in Gondola Square. Tickets also can be purchased by calling Steamboat Central Reservations at (800 922-2722.

Volunteers, dealers needed for Gambler's Ball

Volunteers and gaming dealers are needed for Emerald City Opera's fourth annual New Year's Eve Gambler's Ball at the Sheraton Steamboat Grand ballroom from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dec. 31. The event includes casino gaming, live big band music and dancing, and food and drink. The theme is "Monte Carlo." To volunteer, call 879-1996.
