Topping the news this morning, a month after city planning officials called the proposed Steamboat Springs Community Center "blatantly institutional" and "extremely bland," architects will return to Centennial Hall with revised plans tonight.
Architect Nan Anderson of the Golden firm Andrews and Anderson Architects said Wednesday that the building's new design addresses significant issues the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission raised last month. The commission voted 5-1 against a design that some commissioners compared to an industrial warehouse.
The revised design includes three gabled roofs, raised and varied rooflines, increased landscaping, less asphalt and a covered walkway across much of the building's front façade, which faces U.S. Highway 40 to the north.

When the Routt County Justice Center is completed in late 2007, the historic courtrooms of the Routt County Courthouse will have a new use.
The Routt County Board of Commissioners will conduct meetings and hearings in what is currently the Routt County Court on the third floor of the courthouse on Lincoln Avenue. The larger venue will allow for more than 50 people to attend county meetings, a much larger crowd than can be accommodated in the existing commissioners hearing room.
The eventual move will be part of a large renovation of the courthouse and the Routt County Courthouse Annex. The renovation is designed to increase office and meeting space for county staff by utilizing facilities no longer needed because of the new justice center.
Steamboat Springs saw more big gains in sales tax revenues in October.
The city collected $1.13 million in October. That's a 17 percent increase over October 2005. For the year, Steamboat revenues are 12.35 percent ahead of last year.
Historically October is the fourth smallest month for the city in terms of sales tax revenues, but the large increase might be further evidence that the shoulder season is becoming less of a shoulder season.
Miscellaneous retail and lodging showed increases of nearly 20 percent for October compared to October 2005.
