— The Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. will open 36 more trails and four more lifts Saturday as the ski area ramps up for the holiday season.

The weekend opening will bring the total number of skiable trails to 106 and the number of operating lifts to 11. The remodeled Thunderhead and Rendezvous food courts also will open Saturday.

The terrain opening includes the Sunshine Bowl area and its new Sundial and Rendezvous Way trails as well as Rolex, Westside, Lower High Noon, the O'Clock trails and the redesigned Broadway trail.

"Keeping in spirit of our family-friendly terrain in the Sunshine Bowl, we widened Broadway and lessened the grade to make it less steep," Ski Corp. spokeswoman Heidi Thomsen said.

Broadway's width has doubled in spots, she said.

On the lower mountain, Heavenly Daze, Ted's Ridge, Vertigo and Vogue will open.

The Sundown Express, South Peak, Bashor and Elkhead chairlifts will open Saturday.

On Dec. 15, Ski Corp. anticipates opening the new Sunshine Express chairlift. All the mechanical and load testing has been completed on the lift, and the operating license from the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board is expected to arrive next week.

Depending on conditions, the Morningside Park lift will open Dec. 16.

Mavericks Superpipe typically opens just before Christmas, but Ski Corp. officials expect to open it at the end of next week. Ski Corp. has purchased $500,000 in terrain park grooming equipment, including an $100,000, 18-foot Zaugg Super-

pipe cutter.

Ski Corp. Vice President of Operations Doug Allen said in a new release that the goal is to have 100 percent of the ski area open by the holidays.

"Steamboat has enjoyed its traditional early season snow and cold weather this year," Allen said. "As a result, the mountain is in incredible shape as we move into the holiday period."

The ski area is reporting a 29-inch base at mid-mountain and a 31-inch base at the summit.
