The El Niño weather phenomenon could mean Steamboat Springs won't come close to experiencing the abundance of snow that fell over the city and ski area in December 2005 and January 2006, a leading climate researcher said Wednesday.

However, Steamboat has a better chance than most places in Colorado Ski Country to snag a storm or two during the subtropical jet stream over the next two months, said Klaus Wolter, a scientist with the University of Colorado and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Routt County is bringing in outside expertise to help sort through Xcel Energy's proposal for a new rail line to haul coal.

Routt County commissioners interviewed three consulting firms on Tuesday and decided on the Denver-based Parsons Brinckerhoff firm.

For the next two summers, Steamboat Springs will play host to a national championship for the country's premier trail runners.

Paul Kirsch, championships chairperson for USA Track & Field's Mountain/Ultra/Trail Council, said that a council committee awarded Steamboat the 10K Trail Championships for 2007 and 2008 at a meeting Saturday in Indianapolis.
