Man could face 32 years in prison

A registered sex offender accused of sexually assaulting a teenage boy could spend as many as 32 years in jail if convicted, a Routt County Court judge told the man Wednesday.

Van Barton Bomgardner, 50, was arrested last week on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sexual assault. Bomgardner is accused of supplying alcohol to the boy and engaging in a sex act with him during a Nov. 23 gathering.

During the hearing Wednesday, County Judge James Garrecht told Bomgardner that he needs to obtain legal counsel as soon as possible. In addition to the potential prison sentence, Garrecht told Bomgardner he could be fined $500,000 because the alleged crimes are classified as extraordinary risk crimes.

An arrest warrant indicates Bomgardner has been arrested three times for sexually assaulting children.

Bomgardner is being held at Routt County Jail on a $100,000 bond. His next scheduled court appearance is 1 p.m. Dec. 13.

Winter Sports Club to host Alpine FIS races

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is hosting a Holiday Weekend of Alpine FIS races at Howelsen Hill from Dec. 15-17. The weekend includes two nights and two days of slalom racing. Volunteers are needed to work as gatekeepers. Lunch and a lift ticket voucher to the Steamboat Ski Area for every race worked will be provided. Call Debbie Gooding at 879-9261.

Special Event Funding applications available

In an effort to boost year-round tourism, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association is accepting applications for Special Event Funding. Special Event Funding, pending the determination of the city budget in December, will distribute $75,000 to help market new events in the non-ski season months of 2007.

A committee of representatives from the Steamboat Marketing Committee, Chamber Board and City Council will be formed to evaluate the applications. Applications will be considered based upon the event's tourism possibilities, long-range potential, media appeal and event organizer experience, among other aspects.

All applications are due Dec. 8. They can be picked up at the Steamboat Springs Resort Chamber Association offices or downloaded at www.steamboatchamber.com under "Community Bulletin Board."

I do not live in this community. I do agree that this man is high risk and possibly a threat to this community. While I am aware that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech let us not forget that this man does have innocent children of his own and family members as well. They all have access to these comments and even though this man has done wrong his family has not. I should know I am a family member. I stumbled across this article by mistake. It was hard enough for me to read this article, let alone the comments. Some wounds run so deep even when they are healed it doesn't take much to reopen them.

I agree there is simply no excuse, and I am strongly against crimes against children. Especially sexual assault crimes. Especially ones that involve him and any children. Not only am I a family member, but I used to be one of his children and one of his victims. So please feel free to say what you want, keep in mind that what you say effects other people. I certainly didn't ask to be his family. I'm simply trying to protect my siblings .

That I understand and I am truly sorry for you. I send faxes and letters regularly to the lawmakers in every state as well as DC, urging them to adopt Jessica's Law. These crimes must stop. I would never intentionally hurt anyone and again I am sorry for what you have endured in your life. But I would hope you understand that the reason I speak so fiercely about these criminals is because I want to protect children. I don't want to read any more stories.
