Schools in Routt County are to be commended for their performance in the annual School Accountability Reports.
Steamboat Springs has three schools - Steamboat Springs Middle School, Strawberry Park Elementary School and the North Routt Community Charter School's middle school - that earned excellent ratings in the annual report cards issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
Excellent is the highest rating that can be earned. Schools that are rated excellent rank among the top 8 percent of schools in their category in the state.
The remainder of the schools in Steamboat - Soda Creek Elementary, the North Routt Community Charter School elementary school and Steamboat Springs High School - earned ratings of high, the state's second-highest rating. They rank among the top third of schools in the state.
Hayden Valley Elementary School and South Routt Elementary School both received ratings of high.
Hayden Middle School, Hayden High School, Soroco Middle School and Soroco High School were all rated average.
School Accountability Reports are based primarily on how schools perform on the Colorado Student Assessment Program tests. They are not the only way to judge public schools. However, the report cards are important tools for administrators, teachers, parents and other residents to measure how their schools stack up against comparable districts.
What is important to note about the Routt County schools' performance is that the schools have been able to sustain high performance year after year.
This is the sixth year the state has issued the reports. In that time, none of the four Steamboat Springs campuses has ever earned a rating below high. Strawberry Park has never earned a rating below excellent, and the middle school and high school have earned multiple excellent ratings. The North Routt Charter middle school has earned two excellent ratings.
In those rare instances when schools have earned ratings below average, they have bounced back immediately. For example, both Hayden Valley Elementary and North Routt Charter elementary got low ratings last year; this year, both were rated high.
There are 12 public schools in Routt County that are rated by the state. Three are rated excellent and another five are rated high.
Such depth in the quality of our public schools is to be applauded. Congratulations to the administrators, teachers, staff, students, volunteers and others who help all of our schools succeed.
