Steamboat Springs residents won't be voting on a bond issue for a new recreation center this fall. On Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously rejected an $18 million recreation center proposal. A community survey showed residents were concerned about fees at the center and that residents were less likely to vote for a new recreation center during the same election that they were being asked to approve a new elementary school. The Steamboat Springs School Board voted Monday to ask voters for $29.7 million for a new Soda Creek Elementary School and improvements to Strawberry Park Elementary.
Bond for Chris Alan Ecker was set at $30,000 Tuesday. Ecker was arrested Monday on multiple charges. He is the prime suspect in a string of burglaries and thefts at several Steamboat businesses. Deputy District Attorney Tammy Jenson said Ecker has a lengthy criminal history.
The Haven Assisted Living Facility in Hayden will celebrate its 10th birthday today. The staff will hold a business meeting at 4 p.m. with the birthday celebration from 5 to 6 p.m.

In Sports, the Steamboat Springs Sailors return eight seniors to this year's soccer squad. Nick Labor and David Comeau are expected to lead the team, which opens its season Thursday against Summit County.
