Steamboat Springs At Friday's final Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series event, the Mount Werner Valley View Cross Country, racer Mark Bosley ran into some trouble riding the fast descent from the top of Thunderhead Peak to the base of the Thunderhead chairlift.
Race director Gretchen Sehler said that on his way down from Huffman's trail to Spur Run, Bosley turned his handle bars and catapulted over them, catching his brake lever on the inside of his thigh, causing a deep puncture wound.
Bosley credited and thanked the few racers who sacrificed their race times to help him, including David Keiss, who rode back up to Thunderhead Peak to tell race volunteers to alert emergency medical services, as well as Karl Fredell and Tony Urbick, "who without hesitating took over applying pressure to my wound," Bosley said in a letter written to the Steamboat Pilot & Today.
Bosley also wanted to thank Ed Kimm and Mel Stewart, his two main competitors in the Sport Men's 40-49 division, along with Dan Lemmar and several other unknown racers who stopped to help.
"Hardly a racer went by without slowing and asking if (I) needed more help," Bosley wrote. "The race staff was also fantastic in getting me down as quickly as possible. : It was the best example of what a great community of people we have here in Steamboat."
Sehler said that Bosley, who won the season's overall point title for his division, was doing well and was released from the hospital with a compression bandage and no stitches.
At the end-of-season potluck party after the race, Sehler recognized Keiss, Kimm, Stewart, Fredell and Urbick with the Town Challenge Sportsman award.
"Usually, it's given to one person, but we decided to recognize all of them, we gave them the top prizes - some pretty stylish swag," Sehler said.
