Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs High School alumni Bayli Stillwell and Katie Carter will provide local volleyball fans a couple of good excuses to get out of town next month.
Stillwell, a senior at James Madison University, will play in the Coors Invitational this weekend in Fort Collins. James Madison is scheduled to play Florida Atlantic at 5 p.m. Friday, Wake Forest at 10 a.m. Saturday and Colorado State at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Her former teammate, Katie Carter, a senior at UCLA, will be in Denver the following weekend. The Bruins are scheduled to face Texas State at 5 p.m. Sept. 8, Georgia at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 and the University of Denver at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9. The matches will take place at the Hamilton Gymnasium at the University of Denver as part of the Pioneer Classic.
Carter, who is co-captain of her team, is in her fourth and final year at UCLA.
As a junior, Carter had a career-high 23 kills on 57 attacks in UCLA's five-game upset of then-No. 2 Washington last season. She also collected six blocks in that match for a career-high 26.5 points.
This season, the outside hitter from Steamboat Springs will look for more success as she takes on more responsibility as one of the captains for the Bruins.
In high school, Carter and Stillwell led the Sailors to the Colorado State High School Championship match, which they lost to Lewis Palmer.
Stillwell was named Most Valuable Player at last weekend's James Madison University Days Inn Invitational held in Harrisonburg, Va. Stillwell led the Dukes to the tournament championship with 3.93 kills per game and a .311 attack percentage. She also had seven service aces, 3.36 digs per game and 14 total blocks.
Spectators can purchase single match tickets for the Coors Invitational in Fort Collins. The cost is $5 for general admission and $6 for reserved seating. Children's tickets can be purchased for $3.
Tickets for the Pioneer Classic can be purchased by phone at Ticketmaster services (303) 830-8497. Ticket prices are $8 for adults. Seniors and children's tickets are $4.
This weekend, 2006 Steamboat Springs graduate Tara King will play volleyball in Denver as part of the Mesa State College team.
The Mavericks will take the court at Metropolitan State College in Denver on Friday for the Premier Tournament. Mesa will play Minnesota-Duluth at noon and Florida Southern at 3:30 p.m. The Mavericks will return to Denver the next weekend, Sept 8 and 9, for the RMAC West-East Crossover. Mesa is scheduled to play Nebraska-Kearney at noon and Chadron State at 5 p.m. Sept 8. The team also is scheduled to play Metro State College at 2:30 p.m. and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7:30 p.m. Sept 9.
