Westland residents to vacate mobile home park by Sept. 26
Next month, the party officially ends for Kleiman and the other 100 or so residents of Westland Mobile Home Park. To make way for Riverwalk, a residential and commercial development that could break ground in March 2007, Westland residents must vacate by Sept. 26. The neighborhood covers more than two blocks of Yampa Street. Residents were first notified of future development in April 2003, when Riverwalk Steamboat LLC, managed by Jim Cook, began proceedings to purchase the more than 2-acre site.

Dave Shively: Point Broken
Outdoors
The last time I tried to surf, a friend and I took an 8-foot Kmart inflatable called the Sea Hawk into some mild Atlantic surf. As hormone-ravaged 13-year-olds, it was easy enough to swim out into the waves and ride the whitewater to the jeers and insults of the older, much "cooler" surfers who established domain over their backyard waves in their fancy, oar-less boards.
Forget work ... I'm going to the wake
Local wakeboarders have daily access to state's prime waters
Just larger than 1,000 acres of water, Chatfield State Park's lake's seclusion and picturesque setting at the foot of Hahn's Peak has contributed to its growth as a paradise for local boaters looking to push themselves in the increasingly popular sports of wakeboarding and wake surfing. Dan Wilson says he's seen 350 boats - at one time - on the Chatfield State Park lake's 1,400 surface acres on a busy day. About 20 percent of those boats are towing a wakeboarder or water skier as they tear around the lake in enforced counter-clockwise laps.

Dwindling supply
Growing population will require water storage, conservation
By 2030, more than 60,000 people will live in Northwest Colorado - a 50 percent increase in population from 2005 statistics. The statewide population likely will grow at the same rate. In 2030, an estimated 7.1 million people will call Colorado home, up about 50 percent from the state's 2005 population of nearly 4.7 million.
Fire, police forces seek more staff
Steamboat Springs' population has grown steadily over the past decade, as have the number of calls the city's police department responds to. But there's been no growth in the police department's staffing, and that's something Public Safety Director J.D. Hays hopes will change next year. Hays' 2007 budget, which he presented to the Steamboat Springs City Council during a pre-budget hearing Tuesday, asks for two additional patrol officers. The two officers would cost the city $130,264 a year in salary and benefits.
