Teen Programs introduces program for middle-schoolers

The city of Steamboat Springs' Teen Programs has developed a new program for middle school students.

Teen School Days Off, or TSDO, will be held on the Fridays during the 2006-07 school year during which school is not in session.

The program aims to meet the needs of middle school students and their families. TSDO kicks off Sept. 1, when participating sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will travel to Six Flags Elitch Gardens in Denver.

There will be one Teen Programs staff member for every 10 participants. The kids will take the city's Recreation Activity Bus. The cost is $35 and includes transportation, admission to the amusement park and dinner. Participants must bring a sack lunch.

Space is limited to 30 participants and is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration packets are available at Parks and Recreation offices, 245 Howelsen Parkway. Completed registration forms must be submitted with the $35 registration fee before 5 p.m. Aug. 25.

First Chuckwagon Chili Challenge set for Sept. 23

Main Street Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Pilot & Today are holding the first Chuckwagon Chili Challenge as part of a Downtown Hoedown to be held Sept. 23.

All entrants registered before Sept. 4 will be included in a special supplement to the newspaper featuring the chili maker(s), the proposed recipe for the chili (red, green or firehouse) and interviews with the judges.

Entrants will be expected to produce a three-gallon batch of chili, bring it warm and keep it warm during the Chili Challenge and create a display booth. Tasters will vote the People's Choice Award. For more information, call Tracy Barnett at 846-1800 or e-mail mainstreet@springsips.com.
