Hayden Hayden's next parks and recreation supervisor likely won't have to do much of the manual labor previously expected of him or her.
Instead, the duties of the new parks and recreation supervisor will include more organizational work for recreation programs and events in Hayden. Mowing fields, cleaning parks and facilities and other jobs that previously were part of the position likely will be shifted to a new facility maintenance person. The creation of that position will be discussed during the Town Board's budget discussions in October.
The Hayden Parks and Rec-reation Board met last week to discuss the future of the position. A re-evaluation was spurred by the resignation last month of J.D. Paul, the parks supervisor who had held the job for less than a year. Paul took a better paying job at Twentymile Coal Co., and he said he felt overwhelmed with the workload as the town's parks supervisor. Hayden will begin advertising for the new parks supervisor position next week. The town hopes to hire a facilities manager after the position is approved as part of next year's budget.
The Hayden Town Board discussed the Parks and Recreation Board's recommendation for the position at its meeting Thursday. There were several other options discussed, one of which included contracting out event and recreation organization.
"We can make any of these work," Town Manager Russ Martin said. "That's the optimism in me."
Trustee Tom Rogalski suggested the board table the discussion until all Town Board members were present.
"I think it's an important enough issue," Rogalski said.
Three of the seven trustees - Charles Grobe, Richard Bush and Ken Gibbon - were absent. Trustees Jim Haskins, Lorraine Johnson, Tom Rogalski and Mayor Joe Schminkey were present.
Mayor Schminkey said that not having the parks and recreation supervisor position filled was putting a burden on existing town staff, and they should not count on all the trustees showing up to the next meeting.
"We almost didn't have quorum at the last meeting," Schminkey said. "Right now there are (parks) programs falling though the cracks that should not fall through the cracks.
The four board members present unanimously approved the parks supervisor position as recommended by the Parks and Recreation Board.
The Hayden Town Board also:
- Approved a special event permit for the Routt County Fair parade
- Approved extending the Dry Creek Village Subdivision approval
- Approved issuing a special event beer license for the Cog Rally
- Approved spending up to $15,000 on improvements to Hayden Town Park. Improvements might include resurfacing the tennis courts.
- Approved a request from public works to purchase a used power grader, or maintainer, to help with snow removal. A machine shed will be built to house equipment.
- Discussed the effectiveness of the reverse 911 system. The system was used July 30 to alert residents to conserve water. Some people who should have received the message did not receive it.
