Steamboat Springs If it wasn't difficult enough for Steamboat Springs golf coach Steve Dodson to pick his top four golfers to take to regionals, Thursday's round at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose may have made it tougher.
Without their top two golfers, the Sailors tied Rifle for second Thursday with a team score of 229. Fruita Monument won the tournament with a score of 226.
"It confirms Scott's (assistant coach) and my suspicion that we had a lot of talent," Dodson said. "We have a good core of veteran players and up-and-comers."
Even though three of the five Sailor golfers had never played Montrose before, they sure didn't show it.
Billy Taylor and Cam Fritz shot their lowest rounds in competitive golf. Taylor tied for third place with a 73, and Fritz shot a 79. Michael Weston rounded out the team score with a 77 while Kenyon Brenner shot 80 and Cody Fritz had an 83.
"The last couple of days I've hit the ball well and couldn't make a putt," Taylor said. "Today, I was able to put it all together."
Before the round, Dodson said he wanted three players to go out and shoot in the 70s. When the round was done, he said he couldn't have been happier.
"I asked these five to step it up and they did a wonderful job," Dodson said. "They stuck to their game plan and they performed without our two best players."
The tournament ends a successful week for the Sailors. On Monday they finished third at the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction, and on Tuesday they finished first at Tiara Rado in Grand Junction. The trip also allowed Steamboat to get in a practice round at Devil's Thumb in Delta. Devil's Thumb will host the regional tournament.
"We're starting to put it together," Dodson said, "but we still have some tough schools out there."
