Sailors take 3rd in golf tourney

— Steamboat Springs golf coach Scott Berry had no problem deciding what the focus of Monday afternoon's practice was going to be.

When he finished watching the members of the Steamboat Springs High School golf team turn in a third-place finish at the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction, Berry told his players to grab their irons and head to the practice greens.

"As a team, we worked on chipping in the afternoon," Berry said. "We hit the ball pretty well, but we gave up more than a few strokes in our short game."

The Sailors will need to trim a few strokes if they want to catch Basalt.

"Basalt is the team to beat on the Western Slope this year," Berry said. "They return four seniors and look very strong."

On Monday, Basalt's Jim Knous posted the lowest individual score of the day at 66, and his teammates all finished in the 70s.

Basalt finished nine strokes under Rifle to win the tournament at 224. Rifle was second at 233 and Steamboat Springs was third at 234.

"It was so-so," Berry said of the Sailors' performance.

Paul Berry shot 72 to lead the Sailors. His score, combined with 81s from teammates Tucker Campbell and Michael Weston, brought Steamboat's total to 234. Jake Dombrowski and Billy Taylor also played, but their scores did not figure into the Sailors' total. Both players finished at 87.

Coach Berry said the Steamboat players need to shoot better if they hope to top Basalt in today's tournament at the Tiara Rado golf club, also in Grand Junction. It will be the third tournament of the season on the Western Slope.

Basalt has won two tournaments this season including the opening event last Thursday at Battlement Mesa, where Steamboat finished second.
