The Steamboat Pilot & Today on Tuesday launched its newly re-designed Web site, steamboatpilot.com.
The site contains features that previously were not available to users. Readers can post comments about stories, create blogs, view slideshows of the day's photos, set up an RSS feed of the newspaper's top headlines and sign up for e-mail alerts.
"We believe that site traffic to steamboatpilot.com will continue to increase as our readers become more comfortable with reading the news from our community online," Publisher Bryna Larsen said. "Steamboatpilot.com has been very popular with out-of-town readers, but today, we are finding that locals also are going online to find out what's happening in Steamboat. Because of this, we knew it was time to redesign the site, make it easier to navigate, more comprehensive and, at the same time, offer advanced coverage of our community and a way to disseminate breaking community news."
The Pilot & Today has had a Web site since 1997, and previous online content will remain available through the site's archives. The site's new search mechanism is more user friendly and produces better results than the previous one, Editor Scott Stanford said.
"The search mechanism was an area we knew that we wanted to improve," Stanford said. "We tested it several times Tuesday, and it appears to be working very well."
Users of the site will find that they will have to register again to post content to the forum and make comments about stories. Usernames and passwords from the old site are no longer active.
Users also will notice expanded opportunities to submit letters, photos, story ideas, wedding engagements, anniversaries, births and other announcements to the newspaper. Readers can even participate in the Routt County Spotlight online.
"The new steamboatpilot.com has some fantastic features," Larsen said. "Our Internet team has worked hard to design and launch the site. I'm really proud of the work they've done, and I think our readers will appreciate the new product."
As part of the re-design, the Steamboat Pilot & Today created the new position of online content editor. Laura Meerkatz, a copy editor for the Pilot & Today, was named to the position and will oversee the editorial content of the site. She can be reached at email@example.com or by phone at 871-4246.
