'Talladega Nights' zooms past challengers

— The Will Ferrell NASCAR send-up "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" easily lapped the competition over the weekend, topping the box office with more than $47 million in ticket sales.

The comedy from Sony Pictures was the biggest-ever opening for Ferrell in a starring role.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.:
