Oak Creek The South Routt School District wasted no time in hiring a new principal.
One month after the resignation of South Routt Elementary School principal Kim Rabon, a new principal has been hired to lead the Yampa school -- Michael Young, an educator with 12 years of administrative experience who is the principal of Perry Elementary School in Perry, Okla.
The South Routt School Board approved Young's contract at its meeting Thursday night.
"Mr. Young brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position," Superintendent Kelly Reed said. "His background includes his principal experience, as well as being an elementary teacher at the second, third, fourth and fifth grades. In addition, Mr. Young has served as a special education teacher in Oklahoma. He and his wife are excited about the move to Colorado and look forward to a new experience."
Rabon will finish the school year as principal. In an e-mail to the Steamboat Pilot & Today last month, she discussed the reasons for her resignation, which include not having the full support of the School Board.
"This is a result of some unrest that began last year," Rabon wrote. "I was named interim principal last year, and teachers were told they would be given the opportunity to interview principals for this year. That did not happen, and I was rehired for this year, unanimously, by last year's (school) board. Some teachers were not happy about this. The board has changed considerably this year, and feels, in light of some new issues, the process should happen now. I was offered an interview, but have chosen to move on to the next steps in my profession. I wish South Routt School District great success."
Reed did not comment on the details of what Rabon called "some new issues" that led to her resignation.
"All that I'm at liberty to say is that the board felt it was in the best interest of the district to open the position (to interviews)," Reed said.
