Hawaiian dance to raise money for after-prom party

Steamboat Springs — When you can't serve vodka with lemons, serve lemonade.
With its liquor license suspended for five days this week, the Cantina restaurant and bar in downtown Steamboat Springs is hosting an alcohol-free dance for Steamboat Springs High School students. All proceeds will be donated to the school's after-prom party.
Coordinators in Hayden and South Routt also are seeking donations for after-prom events that keep students dancing well after the midnight hour in a safe, fun environment.
Cantina owner Kristi Brown said the restaurant's license suspension, handed down April 6 by the Steamboat Springs City Council as punishment for a liquor law violation, opened the door for an unusual opportunity.
"We really haven't done anything for the kids before," said Brown, who owns Cantina and Mambo Italiano with her husband, Jeff. "We decided to make something good come out of something bad."
The "Spring Break Kickoff" dance has a Hawaiian theme, Brown said, complete with hula skirts, flowered shirts and fruity punches to slake dancers' thirsts. DJ School Graduate will provide a mix of danceable tunes at the $5 event.
Brown said the high school's leadership class chose the event and theme. Brown originally suggested having the dance Friday night, but the date was changed because many seniors will be leaving for the senior class trip after school Friday.
"Wednesday is an early release day, so kids will be out of school early and able to get their homework done," Brown said. "My staff is really excited about it."
The event is open to all Steam--boat Springs High School students, Brown said, but once they are inside the Cantina, students will not be allowed to leave and re-enter.
"We want to keep with the whole idea of this being a drug- and alcohol-free event," Brown said.
If one-third of the high school's more than 600 students attend, it could be a standing-room only event.
"We might be busting at the seams," Brown said with a laugh.
The high school's prom, themed "A Night in Venice," is May 6 at the Sheraton Steam--boat Resort.

Hayden and South Routt after-prom parties
Hayden High School's after-prom committee is seeking donations for the school's fifth annual after-prom party, April 29. The party at the Routt County Fairgrounds exhibit hall is designed to keep local students and the community safe on prom night. Cash or prize donations can be mailed to the high school, P.O. Box 70, Hayden, CO 81639.
The committee also is looking for volunteers to work the after-prom party. For more information about volunteering or donating prizes, call Alice at 276-3957 or Tammy at 276-4728.
