Girls, boys track team ahead of last year's pace

On Monday --wo days after the Eagle Valley Invitational --oroco track coach Gary Heide still had goosebumps.

"Oh, man," he said, "I am just so excited. The performances our veterans are turning in, they are so far ahead of where they were last year, and the performances of our freshmen ... I knew we had good freshmen, but wow. They are not even missing a beat. We may not get as many points at state, but we are going to qualify a heck of a lot more (athletes)."

Heide apologized for his enthusiasm because it is still early April. The athletes have to make sure they don't peak before mid-May.

Beginning with the Hayden Invitational on Thursday at Moffat County High School, Soroco has four meets in 10 days. Heide said he will monitor the Rams to make sure they stay healthy.

"You've got to be careful," he said. "In the meets, you don't want to wear the kid out, but you have to train them. If it's a cold day, you pull them out and have them run one or two events."

But Heide also doesn't want to halt momentum, and few teams on this half of the state have more.

Soroco's girls placed second as a team, and the boys placed third in the Eagle Valley Invitational. Eagle Valley, a much larger school than Soroco, won both team titles.

The girls were led by Gen--essa Heide, who had a school-record time of 26.65 seconds in the 200 meters. She also tied the school record in the high jump, clearing 5 feet to win the event.

Genessa Heide teamed up with Glenda Long, Sarajane Ros----si and Kyla Schmidt to win the 1,600-meter relay in a school-record time of 4:29.60.

Long did not run her fastest because she's nursing a sore back, so Gary Heide is optimistic the relay can cut more than 10 additional seconds off the record time.

"When Kyla came around and passed that girl and won it for us, it was reminiscent of what she did at state last year," he said.

Schmidt anchored the 800-meter medley relay to a state title in 2005.

The 1,600-meter relay, during which each runner runs a 400-meter leg, is the last event of each track meet.

After Soroco's girls won their race, the boys lined up and placed second in 3:40.62. Team members are Johnny DeCosta, Kyle Hendrickson, Steve Meade and Kieran Corrigan, who also won the 800 and 1,600 meters Saturday.

"That time makes a statement," Gary Heide said. "We have some tough runners, and they will continue to improve. I about jumped out of the stadium when we finished the way we did. I have goosebumps talking about it."
