Steamboat Springs Steamboat's Chix With Stix earned a No. 5 seed in this weekend's state hockey tournament, and it may work to the team's advantage.
Steamboat is pooled with Colorado College, the Silverwolves from Colorado Springs and the Denver Clash. The Chix have a winning record against two of the three teams and a 1-1 record against the top-seeded Silverwolves.
The Women's Association of Colorado Hockey B1 Division Tournament runs Friday through Sunday at the Apex Arena in Denver. The Clash and Ice Monkeys, a B2 team, are the host teams. Steamboat opens play Friday night against Colorado College. The Chix have not lost to CC this season.
Steamboat picked up a loss and a tie against the Denver Synergy on March 25 and 26 at Howelsen Ice Arena, but the results were deceiving. The Synergy play in the A division, a higher division than the Chix play in.
The tie on March 26 was a great result. Steamboat got on the board with 7 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the first period. Riley Polumbus found the back of the net on assists from Jen Travis and Heidi Chapman-Hoy. Denver tied things up in the first period, and neither team scored again. Steamboat amassed 24 shots on goal, and Denver had 23.
The Chix lost, 4-1, to the Synergy on March 25. During the first period, Lacey Dodge scored Steamboat's only goal. Sue Heineke and Diane Dwire were credited with assists.
Player Lee Cox said the Chix should have nearly everyone on the roster for the tournament.
