Matches postponed
Monday, September 26, 2005
The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team decided to postpone Monday's match against Alexander Dawson after the unexpected death of classmate and team manager Adele Dombrowski during the weekend.
Coach John Aragon said the timing of Monday's matches did not seem appropriate and that the team planned to meet informally and talk about how they were feeling instead of playing the matches.
Dombrowski, one of three team managers for the Sailors, was found dead in her bed Saturday morning. Aragon said he got the news about her death midway through the Sailors 6-1 victory against Evergreen, but he kept it to himself until after the Sailors defeated Greeley in the second match.
"It was too late to do anything about it at that point," Aragon said. "The other team was already here, so the coaches decided to go ahead and play the match, and then we shared the news with the players afterwards."
The Sailors will play a plan--ned contest against Denver East at noon Saturday. The team is expected to reschedule the Alexander Dawson matches for early next week before wrapping up the 2005 regular season against Boulder on Oct. 7 in Steamboat.
The varsity 1 team will play at 2 p.m., and the varsity 2 team will play at 4 p.m.
The team then will head to the regional tournament in Montrose from Oct. 13 to 15. The state tournament is scheduled to take place in Pueblo from Oct 20 to 22.
