Student thespians needed to audition for fall play

Steamboat Springs High School students are invited to audition for this fall's production of "Raceworld One."

The play is a takeoff of "Romeo and Juliet" and is set in the future on another planet. Steamboat Springs Middle School drama teacher Rusty DeLucia is directing the play, and high school drama teacher Chula Walker-Griffith is producing.

Auditions are from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today in the high school auditorium.

Steamboat schools will let students out early today

Today is an early dismissal day for Steamboat Springs School District schools. Soda Creek Elementary School dismisses at 1:05 p.m., and Strawberry Park Elementary School, Steamboat Springs Middle School and Steamboat Springs High School dismiss at 1:15 p.m.

Slide open this weekend for last time before winter

The Howler Alpine Slide at Howelsen Hill shuts down for the season at 5 p.m. Sunday. The slide, which is operating during weekends only, is scheduled to be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Director Rick DeVos said the cost to ride the slide will be reduced to $5 in hopes of having one more solid weekend.

"It's been a successful year for us," DeVos said. "This is a chance for locals and visitors to Steamboat to enjoy one last ride."

The money made from the slide helps fund the Winter Sports Club's annual operations. Alpine Slide tickets can be purchased at the yurt at the bottom of the slide.

Riders take the Barrows chair lift to the top of Howelsen, where they slide down the tracks to the bottom of the hill.

Classical music station will stay off air for repairs

Because of technical difficulties, WWFM, the classical music radio station, will remain off the air until a filter is installed.

Group seeks volunteers to help victims of violence

Advocates Against Battering and Abuse is looking for community volunteers interested in helping victims of domestic violence. Advocates will host a 25-hour training this fall that includes two Saturday and five weeknight sessions. The first two sessions are Sept. 28 and Oct. 1. Call Allison at 879-2034.

Search and Rescue fundraiser set for Tuesday

The 10th annual Routt County Search and Rescue fundraiser is from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Bear River Bar and Grill. Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased from any Search and Rescue member.
