A $20 fundraiser ticket could win you a trip to the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star festivities in Pittsburgh.
The Steamboat Springs High School baseball and lacrosse teams are holding a fundraiser for the Steamboat Springs Booster Club and the high school's tier 2 sports. Tier 2 sports are those not funded by the Steamboat Springs School District.
In addition to the drawing for the All-Star trip -- which includes tickets to the game and the Home Run Derby -- ticket-buyers will be eligible to win a Colorado Rockies package for next season and golf balls autographed by former and current MLB players who will be in town to participate in the fundraiser.
Catamount Ranch & Club is hosting a two-day golf tournament and a three-hole shootout Sept. 23 to 25 in conjunction with the fundraiser.
Former MLB players, including Andres Galarraga, Tom Browning, Tom Candiotti, Kevin Tapani, Mike Lansing and Steve Reed are scheduled to come to Steamboat to play in the golf tournament. The golf tournament is open only to former and current MLB players.
The names Galarraga, Lansing and Reed -- all of whom are former Rockies players -- probably are recognizable to many local sports fans. Browning is best remembered for pitching a perfect game for the Cincinnati Reds during their 1990 World Series season.
Most of the ex-baseball players are former clients of Steamboat resident Jim Bronner, an assistant coach with the high school boys basketball team and a former sports agent.
This is the golf tournament's second year, and the former major leaguers expressed an interest in returning to the Yampa Valley to play golf to help high school athletes, Bronner said.
Everyone who purchases a $20 fundraiser ticket will be eligible to win the Rockies package. Additionally, every former or current MLB player who attends the fundraiser will play for a randomly drawn ticket buyer. For example, if 20 players attend, the names of 20 fundraiser ticket-buyers will be drawn. The MLB player who wins the golf tournament will win the All-Star package for the ticket-buyer he was playing for.
The ticket-buyers whose player doesn't win will receive an autographed golf ball from that player.
