Labor Day festivities abound

From vintage warbird airplanes to free music, Labor Day weekend is chock full of events throughout the Yampa Valley. Steamboat Springs and Oak Creek lead the way with a variety of family-oriented activities and entertainment, beginning this morning and running through Labor Day. Below is a list of many of these events, including general descriptions, locations and times.

Saturday

7 to 10 a.m. Pancake breakfast in the commons area at Soroco High School in Oak Creek

8 a.m. Soap Box Derby on Main Street in Oak Creek

9 a.m. Bed races on Main Street in Oak Creek

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wild West Air Fest at Steamboat Springs Airport. $5 for adults; $2 for children. Fly-in event will feature at least 20 planes, including vintage World War II warbirds and the latest in light business-jet technology. The event, which celebrates Steamboat Springs Airport's 50th anniversary, will offer helicopter and plane rides from $40 to $100. Radio-controlled airplane demonstrations, a Salute to the Troops and a classic car show also will be part of the festivities. Parking at the airport is limited, and a free shuttle will run every 15 minutes from the Stock Bridge Transit Center off U.S. Highway 40 and the TIC parking lot off Routt County Road 129 (Elk River Road). Times for some of the specific air fest events are listed below. The Wild West Air Fest continues Sunday at the airport.

10 a.m. Let's Dance choreographed performances at the Let's Dance studio in Oak Creek

10 a.m. Cribbage tournament at Elk's Tavern, 104 Main St. in Oak Creek. Entry fee of $5 for singles and doubles.

10 a.m. to noon Darts tournament at Big Tuna's, 107 Moffat St. in Oak Creek. $5 entry fee.

10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Radio-controlled airplane demonstration at Steamboat Springs Airport

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Art on the Mountain in Gondola Square at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. A wide variety of local and regional artisans will display and sell their work. Art on the Mountain continues Sunday.

11 a.m. Great American Wild West Show characters stroll through downtown Steamboat. Some of those characters likely will include Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and the Lone Ranger.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kiddie Fun Fair and Petting Zoo at Decker Park in Oak Creek. A 19-foot waterslide, ring toss, crochet, pony rides and other activities for children. $5 for an entry bracelet.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Car Bash on Main Street in Oak Creek. Participants can use sledgehammers to destroy an old car near Bonfiglio Drug on Main Street. Three swings for $1. Glass hits cost an extra $1 each.

11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Roadside mine tours meet at Let's Dance studio in Oak Creek

11:45 a.m. Salute to the Troops at Steamboat Springs Airport

1 to 5 p.m. Hang gliders and paragliders launch from the top of Mount Werner. About three dozen hang gliders and paragliders are scheduled to take off from the summit of Mount Werner and descend to the valley floor.

1 to 5 p.m. Bingo in the Oak Creek Ambulance Barn. Twenty-five cents per bingo card, with proceeds benefiting local children.

2 p.m. Gates open for the Free Summer Concert Series: deSoL opens at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. People are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for LIFT-UP of Routt County.

2 to 5 p.m. Summer concerts in Decker Park in Oak Creek

3:30 p.m. Cracker plays the Free Summer Concert Series at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area.

4 to 6:30 p.m. Historical Society barbecue in Decker Park in Oak Creek

7 p.m. Great American Wild West Show at Brent Romick Rodeo Arena in Steamboat. $20 in advance; $22 at the gate; $10 for children ages 4 to 12 in advance or $12 at the gate. The show, a re-creation of the original Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, will feature trick riders and ropers, actors playing legendary Wild West personalities, a cattle drive, a stagecoach hold-up and a tribute to American Indians. Tickets are available through Steamboat Central Reservations, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association Visitors Center, Soda Creek Mercantile and F.M. Light & Sons. The show, which continues Sunday at the rodeo arena, commemorates F.M. Light and Sons 100th birthday.

7 p.m. Comedy show and live music with the band Kuzins at Colorado Bar & Grill in Oak Creek. Tickets are $15 for both performances or $5 for the band only.

Sunday

10 a.m. 21st annual 10K at 10,000 feet running race starts and ends at the Dumont Lake trailhead on Rabbit Ears Pass. The run starts at 9,600 feet and is on rugged singletrack and dirt roads that wind through Alpine meadows and offer spectacular views of the Gore Range and Flat Tops Wilderness Area. A 10K walk begins at 10:05 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the trailhead.

10 a.m. Children's fishing derby at Decker Park in Oak Creek. A half-hour fishing training will be followed by fishing in the Decker Park section of Oak Creek. Prizes for the largest fish caught.

10 a.m. Lee O'Neal remembrance at the softball field in Oak Creek

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kiddie Fun Fair and Petting Zoo in Decker Park in Oak Creek. $5 entry bracelets.

1 to 5 p.m. Hang gliders and paragliders launch from top of Mount Werner

2 to 7:30 p.m. KFMU's 30th birthday celebration in Decker Park in Oak Creek; $1. The party will feature a beer garden and a variety of food vendors. Musical acts are scheduled to include Myria jean, the Plagiarists, American Relay, Casual Delusion, Better Half, Inflight and Bandana and Friends.

3 p.m. Great American Wild West Show at Brent Romick Rodeo Arena in Steamboat. $20 in advance; $22 at the gate; $10 for children ages 4 to 12 in advance or $12 at the gate

9 p.m. Kuzins will perform at Colorado Bar and Grill in Oak Creek. Tickets are $5.

Labor Day

8 a.m. Two-mile run, five-mile walk meets at the Oak Creek Post Office. Prizes for winners.

10 a.m. Oak Creek's Labor Day Parade on Main Street. After the parade, food and games will be offered in Decker Park as well as other activities and entertainment. Skydivers also will descend into the park.

1 to 5 p.m. Bingo at the Oak Creek Ambulance Barn.
