DOW has limited licenses left

In addition to the unlimited elk licenses available over-the-counter for the second and third season, the Colorado Division of Wildlife has 185,000 elk licenses available to hunters in the draw.

The DOW doled out 121,000 of those licenses, meaning 64,000 limited elk licenses are available over-the-counter.

Also available are 31,000 leftover deer licenses.

The leftover licenses are available at license retailers, such as Craig Sports and Cashway Distributors in Craig, and online at

Hunters also can call (303) 291-7519 for leftover licenses.

Out-of-state hunters can buy the licenses by calling 1-800-244-5613.

Licenses are available at DOW offices, but the division encourages people to buy them at license retailers.

Leftover licenses went on sale at the beginning of August.

To buy the licenses, hunters must bring drivers licenses or state identification cards (or copies front and back), proof of hunter education, customer identification numbers or conservation certificate numbers and their Social Security numbers.

DOW license administration manager Henrietta Turner said this year's sales were "about average."

"I was hoping we would be looking a little better," Turner said.

During second and third season, the DOW has unlimited elk and deer licenses.

"We'll sell as many as people want," Turner said. "We don't have a set quota."

The leftover limited licenses, however, are available only for certain hunting units. Some units are private land only, and others have a mix of private and public lands.

As of late July, there were more than 1,000 limited elk licenses available in Moffat County hunting units.

Unlike in years past, archery, muzzleloading and rifle bear licenses are not limited this year. Those licenses are available at retailers, online and at DOW offices.
