Michael Smith is the new editor of the Steamboat Pilot & Today.

Smith comes to the Pilot & Today from the Galveston County Daily News, a 30,000-circulation daily newspaper in Galveston, Texas. Smith served as associate editor, overseeing a staff of 12 reporters and photographers and four correspondents.

Smith has more than 15 years' experience with daily and weekly newspapers. He has spent the past eight in editing roles with the Daily News and the Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times.

"Michael brings a wealth of experience from well-respected newspapers to Steamboat Springs," Publisher Suzanne Schlicht said. "He has a passion for journalism and a strong understanding of the important role newspapers play in their communities. I'm excited to have him as a part of our team."

As editor, Smith will oversee the Pilot & Today's newsroom staff of 14 reporters, photographers and copy editors. He is responsible for the overall news content of the newspaper and serves on the newspaper's Editorial Board.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to work with an organization so clearly committed to high-quality community journalism and to do so in such a beautiful, livable and thriving area," Smith said.

Smith is married to Laura Elder, a veteran newspaper reporter. Elder has accepted a position as editor of the Craig Daily Press. The Daily Press and Pilot & Today are sister newspapers owned by WorldWest Limited Liability Co. of Lawrence, Kan.

Smith replaces Scott Stanford, editor of the Pilot & Today since May 2001. He has accepted a position as assistant news editor of The Advocate, a daily newspaper in Victoria, Texas. The job will allow him to join his wife, Kelly, and two daughters. Kelly Stanford accepted a job as assistant superintendent of schools in Cuero, Texas, last spring.

"I have mixed emotions," Stanford said. "I am looking forward to being reunited with my family and to starting a new challenge; however, I will sorely miss being editor of the Pilot & Today. It's a great newspaper, a great staff and a great community."

Smith's first day is today. Contact him at 871-4221 or msmith@steamboatpilot.com .
