Steamboat Springs Expect spooky decorations, fog and first-rate music in Steamboat Springs High School's commons area tonight.
The high school mixed choir, Musica Dolce, and its women's choir, Bella Voce, will present their first show of the year -- the Halloween Dessert Theater.
The event showcases 21 solo, duet and group performances. All students will be dressed in costume.
Throughout the performance, students will serve all-you-can-eat desserts to audience members, who also are invited to don their Halloween best.
Students have chosen their own music for the performance, which gives them the chance to sing exactly what they want to sing, choir director Gwen Laws said. That means the concert will span a variety of musical genres, including classical, pop, country and musical theater.
The Halloween Dessert Theater will have the feel of a true dinner theater. Laws has performed as a singer in dinner theaters in Las Vegas, and she said the experience is a good one for singers.
"You actually get to get out there and mingle and meet your audience, which is something you don't usually get to do," she said.
Funds raised by the show will go to two causes -- helping the high school choirs participate in music exchange programs, workshops and performances, and letting the students donate to other students through the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
A silent auction, featuring items donated by local businesses, will take place during intermission.
The costumes chosen by students are as varied as the music they will sing, Laws said. She plans to wear a spider lady dress.
The students have diligently made the decorations and desserts.
"It really helps them to gain a sense of responsibility and helps them feel like it's their group and their event," Laws said.
"The kids have worked really hard, and it's going to be a fun concert, a good concert."
The Halloween Dessert Theater is at 7:30 p.m. at Steamboat Springs High School. Dress in costume to be eligible for prize drawings.
