Mineral lease funds will help schools

The Hayden School District, like all school districts, is seeing the costs of heating buildings and driving students to and from school skyrocket.

The good news is that the district is seeing significantly more funds from mineral leases than it expected, and that additional money should cover the additional energy costs, Superintendent Mike Luppes said.

The Hayden School Board tonight will consider giving its final approval to the 2005-06 budget. The most significant changes from the preliminary budget are the additional mineral lease funds and energy costs, Luppes said.

Every month, Routt County allocates money from mineral leases on federal land in the county to school districts and other entities.

For the 2005-06 fiscal year, Hayden budgeted $80,000 in mineral lease funds. Funds have surpassed that amount as well as the total mineral lease funds the district received during the 2004-05 school year.

Based on that pattern, the revised budget projects $130,000 in mineral lease funds by the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2006.

Most of that will help pay higher fuel and heating costs, which the district expects will be about 35 percent more than last year's, Luppes said.

The School Board meets at 7 p.m. in the Hayden High School videoconference room.
