Bicycles pile up at police station
Tuesday, November 15, 2005
If residents are missing a bicycle, there's a good chance it's at the Hayden Police Department.
Ten bicycles have been turned in to the department in the past week -- about as many as have been found in the past year, Officer Darin Falk said.
The department has 15 bicycles, mostly mountain bikes and BMX bikes. They include several Huffy bikes, a Diamond Back and a Kawasaki, which appear to be worth $300 to $400, Falk said.
"Our back parking lot looks like a used-car dealership," he said.
Most of the bikes were found in ditches on the side of the road.
Falk suspects people "decide they don't want to walk through town," grab an unlocked bike from a business or residence and leave it at the other end of town.
To claim a bicycle, call the police department at 276-3741 or 276-3232.
