Man charged in sex assault

A Steamboat man was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Charges allege the 41-year-old man sexually assaulted an acquaintance at about 5 a.m. Saturday in a residence on Spruce Street. The woman told police she was very intoxicated, passed out and awoke to find the man sexually assaulting her, Officer Garrett Wiggins said.

The suspect also was intoxicated. He was cooperative when police arrived, Wiggins said. After investigating the residence and interviewing both parties, police took the suspect and the woman to Yampa Valley Medical Center for treatment.

"After our interviews, we felt probable cause existed," Wiggins said.

The woman did not suffer significant injury in the assault, he added.

The suspect was in custody at Routt County Jail, charged with sexual assault, a Class 4 felony, and a Class 2 petty offense for possessing drug paraphernalia. Bail was set Monday at $20,000. His next court date is Wednesday.
