Although many bands do musical gymnastics to avoid the verse-chorus-verse approach to songwriting, The Fryday Band recognizes the value of the classic formula.
Their original songs are based on the tried-and-true technique that leads to simple phrasing and simple songs.
One of the few covers they perform, "Country Roads" by John Denver, is a perfect example of a song that works. People remember it. It creates a storyboard image in the mind of the listener and they sing along.
When The Fryday Band frontman Jamie Varley looks for inspiration, he turns to songwriters such as Denver or Neil Young.
His songs are nostalgic takes on growing up, falling in love and learning about life.
"I try to put a story or a moral behind every song," Varley said. "One song will be about falling in love on the first date, while others are a little deeper. You don't see the actual scene behind the tune. You have to listen to the song a few times to get it."
The San Diego-based band's approach to song construction may be classic, but their stage presence is something completely different -- think The Beatles' songwriting with a Spearhead vibe.
Varley has an energetic performance style of running around the stage and encouraging the audience to have a good time.
"Our live shows are a lot of fun," Varley said. "We try to connect with the crowd. We try to get people dancing, and we like to laugh."
This weekend's show will be The Fryday Band's first time in Steamboat Springs. The band is passing through as part of its Rocky Mountain High Tour of Colorado.
