Craig Hunting isn't the only activity that draws visitors to Craig in the winter. Recreation hits a high as snowmobiles gear up and cross country skiers and snowmobilers hit the fields. For those looking for a warm way to spend the afternoon, the area boasts several opportunities.
Craig offers a rural town atmosphere filled with small shops that boast unique wares and hometown service, sites embroiled with old west history and recreational opportunities for all ages.
The following is a list of can't-miss opportunities while visiting Craig and Moffat County:
- Historic Downtown Craig
Craig's historic downtown offers a variety of shops with wares you don't see anywhere else. Find that old antique or a great piece to add to your living room. Every store is within walking distance.
- Yampa Valley Golf Course
Running adjacent to the mighty Yampa River, the course offers views of the surrounding mountains, bald eagle families and, of course, terrific golf. Once the snow flies, the course is used by cross country skiers and snowshoers.
- Cedar Mountain
Located five miles north of Craig on County Road 7, Cedar Mountain is a quick, easy escape to a Northwest Colorado outdoor experience. The mountain, which rises about 1,000 feet above the Yampa Valley, contains about 880 acres of Bureau of Land Management land. A round-trip hike takes about an hour.
One trail leads to the peak of the mountain, which provides a stunning view of Craig and the Yampa Valley.
- Museum of Northwest Colorado
One of the first stops a visitor should make is the Museum of Northwest Colorado. The Museum, located at 515 Yampa Ave., in downtown Craig, is the home of an extensive collection of relics left by those who settled and eventually tamed this area of the old West. Chief among the museum's collections are artifacts from the gunslingers and outlaws which frequented the area. The museum is home to the renowned cowboy and gunfighter collection.
- Marcia Car
If history is what you're interested in, then visit the Marcia Rail Car. The rail car was David Moffat's personal vehicle to traverse his empire. Moffat was a Denver businessman who was integral to the railroad's efforts to breach the Rocky Mountains. The rail car was originally manufactured in Chicago, and was purchased by the Craig Chamber of Commerce. It's across the street from the Chamber of Commerce on Victory Way. Free tours are given Monday through Friday throughout the summer. Call 824-5689 to book yours now.
