Volunteers, food needed for Thanksgiving dinner

Routt County United Way and Vectra Bank are sponsoring the free Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 24. Dinner volunteers and prepared food donations are needed for the event at Steamboat Springs Community Center. For information or to volunteer, call Routt County United Way at 879-5605. Soroco parents meet with teachers Wednesday

Soroco High School and Middle School teacher conferences are from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Parents are asked to call as soon as possible to schedule conferences with teachers. Call the high school at 736-2531 or the middle school at 736-8531.

Bereavement support group meets Mondays

The Visiting Nurse Association sponsors a bereavement support group from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays beginning this week and ending Dec. 19. The group will meet at the VNA office in Steamboat. The support group will focus on developing coping skills and offering support for getting through the stress of the holidays while grieving the loss of loved ones. Groups helping veterans left homeless by storm

American Legion posts in Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Yampa and Craig, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Steamboat and the VFW Auxiliary in Steamboat are raising money to provide emergency housing assistance to veterans who lost their homes because of Hurricane Katrina. Donations can be made to the American Legion National Emergency Fund at any American Legion post or by dropping off donations at First National Bank of Steamboat Springs or the Moffat County National Bank. All donations go directly to veterans who have lost their homes. The fundraising effort will continue through Friday.

Schools holding book fairs through end of the week

Strawberry Park Elementary School's Book Fair lasts until Friday in the school's library. The free fair features children's books, interactive software, adult books and best-sellers from more than 150 publishers. The fair is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Saturday, when it opens at noon and closes at 4 p.m. The fair ends at noon Friday.

Soda Creek Elementary School's Book Fair is from Monday to Friday in the school's library. The fair is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Call 871-3390 for more information.

The Soroco High School and Middle School library is holding a Books Are Fun Book Fair from Monday to Friday. Everyone is invited to visit the library and browse through the selection. Purchases help support the Soroco High School and Middle School library.

Work-force center hosts veteran's appreciation day

The Colorado Workforce Center is holding a Veteran's Appreciation Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, when it will provide veterans' services information for all military veterans regardless of whether they're registered with the workforce center. The event will be held in at the Steamboat Springs Workforce Center, next to the Driver's License office in the Sundance at Fish Creek shopping center. For more information, call 879-3075.

Christmas tree-cutting permits available for $10

Permits to cut firewood and Christmas trees in the Routt National Forest are available at U.S. Forest Service offices in Steamboat Springs, Yampa, Walden and Kremmling. A Forest Service employee also will be at the Bureau of Land Management office in Craig from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Dec. 23.

Firewood permits are $20 for two cords of fuel wood. Permits are required for every pickup and trailer load of wood removed from the forest. Christmas tree permits are $10 a tree. There is a limit of five permits per household. Trees are for personal use only and cannot be resold.
