The Hayden High School volleyball team finished its season at the District 5 tournament in Paonia during the weekend.
The Tigers went 1-2 in pool play, defeating Grand Valley on Saturday, but did not advance into crossover play. Meeker and West Grand are the two representatives from the Western Slope League advancing to this weekend's regional tournament.
The Tigers finished 8-14 overall, and the eighth win -- a 25-21, 25-22, 25-17 victory against Grand Valley -- was one of the most important of the season.
"For my seniors, it was their last game," Hayden coach Becky Burdick said. "(Before the match) the seniors had a couple words for the girls and brought it together. I really didn't have to say anything."
In the final match, senior Chelsea Fry had a team-high 12 kills.
"She did really well," Burdick said.
Hayden's offense did an excellent job finding the floor against Grand Valley. Seniors Sara Sumerlin and Mariah Doolin had five and four kills, respectively. Junior Emily Whiteman also had five kills. Junior Katy Koehler had three kills. Senior Alicia Hall had four digs. Senior Justine Bedell also was a member of this year's team.
"They came together during that match," Burdick said about the team. "Everybody served well."
Hayden lost its other two pool play games Friday. Paonia defeated Hayden, 27-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-6.
"It was a totally different game," Burdick said. "When we played them the first time, (it was not close)."
Hayden also lost to Rangely, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15.
