Trying to get people dancing is a dance in itself.
Every Thursday, DJ Also Starring (aka Brian Alpart) sorts through three crates of vinyl for the right mix of music to match or create the mood.
He starts spinning at about 10 p.m. and doesn't stop until last call.
His crates are full of hip-hop, reggae, funk, soul, '80s and disco.
When he walks into Mambo Italiano each week, he has no idea what he's going to play, he said. "Sometimes, it's just a vibe. Some people come out, and they just want to dance, and when that happens, it's so much fun. There's people having a good time and paying attention to what you are doing."
He is sure to keep the music spontaneous. Lining up the music beforehand doesn't work, he said. "That's why you need a DJ. Otherwise, you could just put in a mix tape."
While other DJs are going back to CDs, DJ Also Starring still plays vinyl.
"I think the thing that sets me apart is my knowledge and selection of music," Alpart said. "I always bought records, and I still do.
"I have a lot of variety -- a lot of flavor."
On most Thursdays, DJ Also Starring spins with another DJ who calls himself Luchai (aka Randall Purintun).
"He has a real eclectic sense of music, and we have a lot of fun bouncing off each other," Alpart said.
