Hayden parents won't have to take their children to Steamboat Springs for day camp this summer.

At the urging of parents, Totally Kids is extending its after-school program into a day camp that will include swimming, fishing, picnicking and other activities.

The Hayden camp, modeled after the Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation day camp, is for children ages 5 to 12. Activities start June 1 and end Aug. 19.

Several spots are open for the duration camp, and there are more openings for children on specific days, said Caroline Gregory, director of the program.

Through the program, children will go to the library, movie theater and bowling alley. They also will hike at Yampa River State Park, picnic at the Strings in the Mountain tent, fish at Steamboat Lake and have a cookout at Stagecoach State Park.

Various grants helped offset the costs of the program. Contributors include the town of Hayden, United Way, Yampa Valley Community Foundation and the EPYCS programs at Hayden High School and Meeker High School.

The Hayden School District also made a classroom at Hayden Valley Elementary School available for the program and will provide school buses for field trips. Totally Kids will pay for bus drivers and gas costs.

Day camp staff will be available, and the classroom will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

The camp is $25 per day for the first child in a family and $15 for each additional child.
