Michael Hogue is inviting shooting enthusiasts to spend a part of their Memorial Day at the Three Quarter Circles Ranch.
The ranch's 40-acre sporting clay course will host a Memorial Day Fun Shoot starting at 1 p.m. Monday.
For $30, participants can compete in a 100-target event, which will be held on the 12-station course.
The Three Quarter Circles sporting clays course is at 26210 West U.S. Highway 40.
To reach the ranch, participants should drive a mile west of Steamboat II, take a right on the dirt road and go up the hill to the clubhouse.
Hogue said the event offers shooters a chance to participate in a competition that is fun and challenging.
"It's like golf with a shotgun," Hogue said about sporting clays.
The event is open to anyone and has been scheduled so that it will not conflict with other Memorial Day activities planned for the day.
Three Quarter Circles ranch offers shotgun rentals and ammunition, as well as instruction.
In sporting clays, the athletes move between different stations while attempting to shoot as many clay pigeons as possible using a shotgun.
A typical game includes 100 targets thrown at a variety of heights, speeds and directions to challenge the shooter's skill levels. The targets may vary in size and color, so that the presentation is always different for the shooter.
The competitor's score is based on how many of those targets are broken at the end of the round.
Targets may be thrown one at a time, one immediately after the other or two at a time depending on the station.
Hogue said the sport is one of the fastest growing in the country and has been a feature of the Three Quarter Circles Ranch since the course was opened in the summer of 2002.
Hogue said the first shooting competition at the course normally takes place in early May, but this year's wet weather makes Monday's event the first of season.
Three Quarter Circles Ranch is scheduled to host three registered shoots this summer. The course also opens at 9 a.m. on weekends and by appointment during the week. For more information about sporting clays, to register for the Memorial Day shoot or to make an appointment call 846-5647.
