Centennial celebrations in beginning stages

March 9, 2006, won't be an ordinary day: It will mark the 100th anniversary of Hayden's official incorporation as a town.

Hayden residents don't intend to let the day or year pass by without celebrating.

A diverse group of community representatives have begun preliminary plans for activities and events commemorating the town's birthday.

"It's going to be a pretty big production," said Lorraine John--son, chairwoman of the committee.

The group, which includes representatives from the town, school district, churches, museum and just about every entity and organization in Hayden, has been busy coordinating an events calendar that won't interfere or conflict with other happenings in Routt County.

Although the group hasn't settled on specific events or dates, it hopes to kick off centennial activities at about the time of the town's official birthday.

More activities will follow throughout the year, taking advantage of occasions such as the lighting of the town Christmas tree to honor the town's heritage.

The main celebration likely will be during Colorado Days, a two-day event in July sponsored by the Northwest Colorado Shriners Club.

The Centennial Committee already has invited the Denver Shriners and other Colorado Shriners clubs to the celebration, Johnson said.

As plans progress, subcommittees will handle budgets, promotions and other aspects of the project.

Eventually, the committees will be seeking sponsors and volunteers to help with activities.

They also are working to establish a centennial theme and criteria for a logo contest that probably will start in August or September.

Anybody who has ideas for centennial activities or is interested in volunteering or sponsoring events should call Johnson at 276-3425.
