Commissioners approve grants from museum tax

The Routt County Board of Commissioners approved several grants from local historic organizations for additional funds from the Museum and Heritage Fund tax.

Two requests were fully funded, Routt County Manager Tom Sullivan said. One was a $2,195 grant request from the Tread of Pioneers Museum to help preserve visual, oral and written history of notable people and events in the community. The other was a $450 mini-grant request from the Moonhill Schoolhouse and Community Center Inc., to help produce and distribute two editions of a quarterly community newsletter.

Historic Routt County's request for $2,545 to help purchase office furniture and computer equipment was only partially approved. Sullivan said county commissioners thought the county might have some computer equipment and furniture to donate, so the organization would not have to purchase everything it proposed.

The grants are awarded through the capacity building fund, a small part of the more than $200,000 the countywide mill levy collects each year. Most of the funds are divided among historic groups and museums according to the group or museum's taxing district.
