S. Routt looks at benefits policies

Several changes to benefits policies for South Routt School District employees appear likely to be approved by the School Board next month.

At their meeting last week, board members unanimously approved, on first reading, changes to policies dealing with employee insurance benefits and sick and personal leave.

The first proposed change would add a sentence to the existing policy clarifying that life insurance benefits for full-time district employees are equal to an employee's annual salary, up to $50,000.

Superintendent Steve Jones, who presented the proposed revision to the District Improvement Team, said he doesn't think anyone in the district has any issues with it.

The second proposed change is to the district's employee leave benefits policy. Existing policy grants district employees 10 sick days and two personal days a year.

Teachers want more flexibility with their leave days, Jones said.

"This was probably the biggest issue with the District Improvement Team this year," he told board members.

The proposed revision would allow employees to have eight sick days and four personal days a year. The revision also would allow employees, under certain circumstances, to use leave days immediately preceding or following a school break.

"I don't believe these policies will be abused," Jones said. "It's just going to allow some flexibility for our staff, and they will really appreciate that."

The School Board will vote to approve the policies on second reading at its April meeting.
