Soap Box Derby deadline for kids approaching
A deadline is approaching for youngsters interested in ordering a racecar kit and taking part in the June 11 All-American Soap Box Derby in Oak Creek.
Children ages 8 to 17 as of Aug. 1 are eligible for this year's race, which will be held on Main Street in Oak Creek.
The recommended deadline for ordering a car kit is April 15. The cost, including registration fees, is about $600. Order forms can be obtained on the Web at http://aasbd.org, or by writing the All American Soap Box Derby at P.O. Box 7225, 789 Derby Downs Drive, Akron, OH 44306. Call (330) 733-8273.
The Oak Creek race is sponsored by Youth in Motion of Steamboat Springs, the town of Oak Creek and Rotary International.
For local information, contact derby director Michelle Petix at 736-2777 or e-mail mpetix@springsips.com. She can help interested children find sponsors or a used car.
Youngsters need an adult mentor to help them build the car, a process that takes about 40 hours.
The winner of the 2005 Steamboat SBD will be sent to Akron, Ohio, to take part in the All American SBD world finals. Last year's Steamboat champion, Magen Rae, advanced to the second round of the championships where she lost to the eventual national champion.
