Park offers ice skating

A skating pond is being kept clear at Yampa River State Park.
Rangers, who maintain the skate pond, say it has 24 inches of ice, but high temperatures have left the surface a bit slushy. The pond should be suitable for skating after a couple of hard freezes, rangers said.
The skating pond is an alternative to skating in town. High temperatures have prevented the town of Hayden from setting up its portable ice rink in Hayden Town Park this season.
Yampa River State Park is west of Hayden on U.S. Highway 40. Residents may skate on the western-most pond at their own risk with an annual or day state park's pass.
Day passes cost $5, and annual passes cost $55. Passes are available at any state park, as well as chambers of commerce in Steamboat Springs and Craig.
Yampa River State Park is open seven days a week. For ice skating conditions, call 276-2061.
