Dawn Alperti: Clarifications

In response to the article printed on Feb. 23, "Be Careful Out Of Bounds," Routt County Search and Rescue would like to clarify several points.

First, Colorado Search and Rescue teams do not charge for their services. Second, there is a Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue card, not a Routt County Search and Rescue card. If an individual holding a current card, hunting or fishing license or registration for an off-road vehicle requires the services of a search and rescue team in Colorado, the team is eligible for reimbursement of any incurred expenses during the mission from the Search and Rescue Fund administered by the Department of Labor and Affairs. If the individual in question does not have a current card license or registration, the team is not eligible for reimbursement, but the team still does not charge the individual.

In the case of the San Francisco couple who was rescued Feb. 21 by Steamboat Ski Patrol, the $1,000 bill is from the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. for the use of its equipment and employees.

The Steamboat Ski Patrol is a highly trained group of professionals who know the ski area and the terrain immediately surrounding it better than anyone else. Because of proximity, they can respond quicker and are the best option for lost or stuck out-of-bounds skiers and riders.
