A new salary schedule for the Hayden School District may be more attractive to new teachers.
The Hayden School Board on Wednesday approved measures raising the base salary for teachers by about 2 percent to a target mark of $28,000.
"We just felt is was real important to get to that level to be more competitive with schools around us and with other schools our size in Northwest Colorado," Superintendent Mike Luppes said.
To accomplish that goal, the board agreed to raise each teacher and support staffer's present salary by 1 percent plus about $300. That amounts to a raise of 1.5 percent to 2 percent, Luppes said.
The raise, which helps account for increased costs of living, is added to regular step increases teachers receive each year based on their education level and time with the district.
The board had budgeted 1 percent raises for all staff for the 2005-06 school year, but teacher resignations allowed the district to come back with a bigger boost, he said.
Even with the raises, it is difficult for Hayden to compete with larger neighboring school districts, which are able to provide new teachers more money. However, Hayden finds other ways to compete for and keep teachers.
The district has one of the most attractive retirement bon--uses in the area, Luppes said.
After 15 years with the district, retiring teachers receive 35 percent of the previous year's salary, and after 20 years, they receive 70 percent of their last salary.
In other business, the School Board adopted a 2005-06 fiscal year budget. The final budget won't be approved until October, when the district has final student and funding counts.
The board also accepted resignations from three staff members at Hayden Valley Elementary School: special education teacher Crystal Miller, second-grade teacher Melany Neton and fourth-grade teacher Laura LeBrun.
The board rehired second-grade teacher Holly Hoskins to replace Neton. The board had not renewed Hoskins contract because of budget-reduction measures.
