Huck Finn/Becky Thatcher Fishing Derby on Saturday

The Steamboat Optimist and Rotary clubs will hold their 23rd annual Huck Finn/Becky Thatcher Fishing Derby and Pancake Breakfast on Saturday at Walton Pond. The breakfast begins at 8 a.m., and the fish derby starts at 9 a.m. Children can receive many prizes, including best Huck Finn or Becky Thatcher costume, biggest fish caught and first fish caught. The event is sponsored by Walton Pond Mini-Storage, The Egg and I and Wells Fargo Bank. Call 879-3294 or 879-1086.

Volunteers needed for running race June 25

Volunteers are needed to help with the 14th annual Spring Creek Memorial Trail running race June 25. The Starbucks "Make Your Mark" program will be donating $10 an hour for each volunteer who helps out on this race to the Yampa Valley Community Foundation's Spring Creek Mountain Park Fund. This Fund's mission is to enhance, improve and maintain Spring Creek Trail. If you want to help with the race and help raise money for the Spring Creek Mountain Park Fund at the same time, call John Chapman at 875-2329.

SportsMed offering free hand paraffin dips daily

SportsMed at Yampa Valley Medical Center is celebrating National Hand Therapy Week by offering free hand paraffin dips from 1 to 3 p.m. daily, through Friday, on a drop-in basis. Free hand-injury screenings are by appointment only. Call 871-2370.

Weigh books for prices at library's annual book sale

Bibliomaniacs, those people who collect and treasure books to the point of madness, won't want to miss Bud Werner Memorial Library's Annual Book Sale on Saturday at the Depot Art Center. Book lovers will discover a treasure trove of second-hand books to choose from at the bargain price of $1 a pound. This year, a Scholastic Book Sale for children will be held in conjunction with the event, with new books for sale at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Both sales run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds from the book sale will benefit the services, programs and collections of Bud Werner Memorial Library. Call 879-0240.

4-H Club hosting annual charity horseback ride

The Steamboat 4-H Club will host the 10th annual charity horseback ride to benefit the St. Jude Research Hospital at 9 a.m. Saturday. The ride travels from the Red Dirt Trailhead on Rout County Road 129 to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, where lunch is served and discounted admission to the pools is available. The ride then returns to C.R. 129. Call 879-2968.

Artists needed for summer Art Walks at Torian Plum

Artists are being sought to participate in Torian Plum's summer Art Walks, which will take place July 15 and 29 and the weekend of Aug. 12 to 14. Call Shawn Donnelly at 879-6296.
