Two people have applied for openings created by resignations on the Steamboat Springs School Board.
Michael Loomis, who recently resigned from the District 5 seat because he moved into District 1, has applied for the District 1 seat that Tami Havener recently resigned. Tom Miller-Freutel has applied for Loomis' old District 5 seat.
The deadline to apply for the seats is Monday. The School Board will interview applicants at its Monday meeting and likely will make appointments that night.
"We would encourage people to apply and get involved in the school district," board President Paula Stephenson said.
Being on the board is a good opportunity for people who follow what the School Board does, especially those who don't agree with some of the board's decisions, she said.
"Now's their chance to step up and actually put themselves in that position," Stephenson said.
Miller-Freutel is an involved parent who has attended School Board meetings before, Stephenson said.
The District 1 seat opened when Havener, the board's vice president, announced that she planned to resign before the November elections. Havener's position would have been up for re-election in November, and she already had said she planned not to run.
She decided to leave before the election to provide stability and continuity for the district. Her announcement came soon after Loomis' resignation, and Havener said she fully supported Loomis and hoped he would be appointed to her position.
The School Board does not have to appoint applicants if they are not qualified, even if there is only one applicant for each position.
"Nothing is automatic," Stephenson said. "We want to make sure we have the best people and qualified people for the job."
She said she thought that both candidates were qualified for the openings.
The School Board has 60 days from the time a board member resigns to appoint someone to the open seat. People appointed during that time frame would serve until the November elections, when they could run for the position.
However, if someone is appointed less than 90 days before the election, and the seat to which they are appointed is not up for election, that person would serve until the term of that seat has expired.
