A 9-year-old boy was hospitalized Wednesday for injuries he received in a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 40.
Nicolas Deluca of Hayden was taken by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Nicolas' mother, 33-year-old Stacy Deluca, and his sister, 14-year-old Samantha Deluca, were treated for minor injuries at YVMC and released.
The accident occurred at 11:40 a.m. when the truck Stacy Deluca was driving collided with a truck driven by Hans Berend, 41, of Steamboat Springs.
Colorado State Trooper Kirk Gardner said Berend was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup. Gardner said Berend was traveling west on U.S. 40 near its intersection with Routt County Road 33A when he slowed and attempted to make a U-turn.
Deluca, who was traveling east, applied the brakes of her 2001 Dodge Ram but could not stop before hitting Berend's pickup, Gardner said.
Gardner said both vehicles suffered extensive front-end, suspension and body damage as a result.
All parties involved were wearing seatbelts.
Trooper Gardner said Berend received a summons to appear in court for careless driving that resulted in bodily injury.
