Hayden committee seeks logo contest entries

The Hayden Centennial Committee is accepting entries for best logo and poster designs depicting the town's 2006 Centennial theme: Honor and celebrate the past; Imagine the future.

Designs should incorporate any or all of the following elements: agriculture/ranching, mining, vistas/landscapes/river, wildlife, railroad and historic structures.

The contest is open to professional and nonprofessional artists, as well as non-Hayden residents. Prizes will be awarded to winners. The deadline is Oct. 1.

Buff Pass hiking remains unreachable due to snow

The hiking trails on the Continental Divide at Buffalo Pass are still unreachable because snow covering the road.

Hahn's Peak Ranger District Wilderness Manager Jon Hal--verson reported that, as of July 8, Forest Road 60 (County Road 38) leading to Buffalo Pass remains closed at the upper gate near "The Overlook."

Elsewhere, Halverson said portions of the trails to Gilpin Lake and Mica Lake are snow-covered with dangerous creek crossings. Gilpin Lake was mostly frozen, and Mica Lake was frozen over, as of Friday.

One option for wilderness access is the North Lake Trail (No. 1164), which is mostly snow-free to the lake and up to the Continental Divide.

Gather to support Pearl family at fund-raiser

Friends of the Jerry and Valerie Pearl family in Steam--boat Springs are planning a fund-raiser from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the lodge at Storm Mountain Ranch to help them defray the ongoing medical expenses of their daughter Allison.

Allison Pearl has been diagnosed with a heart condition that will necessitate lifetime medical attention. The benefit will feature silent and live auction items, as well as live music and a Mexican buffet, courtesy of Dos Amigos.

Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door, but the organizers urge advance purchase at All That Jazz to help them get a head count for the buffet. Admission is $5 for children younger than 12.
