Sound Off for Jan. 30

Gart looks great
About the new Gart building: I think it looks great, especially compared to the peach palace that's across the street.
Share the wealth
Yes, I do think the half-cent sales tax should be spread among county schools. The fact that you had the audacity to say something about giving it to Texas and California? Excuse me, but tourists here come from all over the world, not only Texas and California. And, yes, we do know that Scott Stanford's wife works for the school system here. Oh, duh. No wonder they have such a negative, horrible commentary, as usual.
Yes, Hayden, Oak Creek and Yampa should be included on the sales tax because we all spend our money in Steamboat, and we need to have better schools, also. This should be shared among the schools so we all can be great, not just the Steamboat schools.
Another Aspen?
Well, as usual, it was quite interesting reading our monthly chamber report, Boat Biz. Once again, our chamber seems to have jumped ship or missed the boat. The summer marketing update emphasized the cut-throat competition from Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, etc., fighting for a piece of the action. They boast that Steamboat in the summertime is getting an extreme makeover. Is this why our chamber goes to Avon, Eagle-Vail to find our true character? Do we want to be another Vail or Aspen? Don't we have enough quality marketing, advertising and design companies right here that are members of our chamber and members of our unique community.
Sick of sick kids
I'd like to have the newspaper do an article about how many sick children go to school before the disease becomes rampant and there's 120 people sick and they bring it home to our households so we get it. Do the teachers or parents have any insight as to when children shouldn't be in school?
Mallard Fillmore is bad
Mallard Fillmore is bad and biased. Stop printing it.
Oak Creek's streets
I just wanted to comment on the town of Oak Creek. I'm thrilled that the town gets these grants for these nice amenities and that we have all these nice restaurants and places to go. Please, now can we get a grant to fix these streets? They are horrendous.
Justice center
The section of wetlands where the commissioners want to locate the new justice center should be made into a wildlife sanctuary as a reminder of what to avoid in the future. The land between the jail and U.S. Highway 40 could be converted into an annex for the county commissioners or anyone else who really needs to get moved out to that end of town.
Quit griping, y'all
Here's a sound-off most won't expect: Almost all sound-off comments I read are griping about something. Maybe y'all should be happy for what you have. As you can see by the "y'all" we are down south, in Moyock, N.C. Like you, we put up with tourist traffic to the beaches, seasonal work and fluctuations in the local economy. What we don't have around here is the beautiful scenery, wildlife, politicians and ranchers who have the common sense to keep "open space" and restrictive covenants, like you all have. Currently the flood gates have opened with the building of a new highway, and the developers are raping the place. The local government is joining in and allowing the destruction of our small-town communities. It is our dream to be able to improve our new farm during the next few years and make enough equity to be able to sell it and buy something out there, even if it's small, just to live in such a beautiful place. This month's issue of Cowboys and Indians featuring the Home Ranch, is pinned on our refrigerator, and is one of the top reasons we work so hard. Someday, we hope to be there. In the meantime, I'm "sounding off" that y'all should look around you, and appreciate what you have.
