Rob Douglas: Patriot Act backer

Although I disagree with the decision of the Oak Creek Town Board in passing "a resolution opposing the USA Patriot Act," I applaud the symbolism. This act of representative democracy is in the greatest tradition of this free land. Given that the resolution was passed unanimously by the board, I can conclude only that opposition to the Patriot Act is fully representative of the views of Oak Creek residents and businesses. This saddens me.
As one who has spent a lifetime working in security, has examined the Patriot Act in great detail and has testified before Congress on national security issues including aspects of the Patriot Act, I find the decision of the board exceedingly short-sighted. The USA Patriot Act (passed overwhelmingly by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle) has served the country well during a time of war. Parenthetically, a war and law designed to protect the ability of the Oak Creek board to act gratuitously.
As a resident of Routt County with an Oak Creek mailing address but outside the voting boundaries of Oak Creek, I cannot demonstrate my disgust with the board in the traditional electoral sense. Fortunately, there are other ways to vote. Therefore, while the resolution stands, I no longer will patronize Oak Creek.
